Start with the HTTPS already included
Silurian managed web hosting includes basic SSL and automatic HTTPS. You can leave the commercial certificate option empty. Adding a paid certificate is optional and has its own price; the configurator displays the cost before you add hosting to the cart.
DV: domain validation
DV means Domain Validation. The certificate authority checks control of the domain. It does not verify the legal identity of the company operating the website. Both free and commercial certificates can use DV; paying for DV does not turn it into company validation.
EV: extended validation
EV means Extended Validation. The certificate authority checks domain control and performs more extensive checks on the organisation and the applicant's authority. Expect organisation details and supporting verification before issuance. EV adds identity verification; its label does not by itself make the encrypted connection stronger than DV.
Which option should I choose?
If your goal is to serve your website over HTTPS, start with the certificate included in hosting. Choose a commercial DV option only when you need a specific feature or service covered by its terms. Consider EV when verified organisational identity is a stated requirement for your project. Check that requirement and the certificate coverage before paying; a higher price alone is not a reason to select it.
Before selecting a paid certificate
Check the domain names it covers, the initial charge and any renewal charge shown for your hosting period. If you are unsure whether your organisation can complete EV verification, ask Silurian before ordering. The option can be removed by clicking it again while configuring the order. Changing that option does not remove your chosen application or domains.
Certificates are one part of website security
HTTPS protects the connection. It does not replace software updates, secure administrator accounts or tested backups, and a certificate is not a guarantee that a website's content is trustworthy. Keep those responsibilities separate from your choice of validation level.
